the moment, the context

White supremacy needs a lot of people to be attached to their whiteness for it to work. We believe we can and must disempower whiteness in order to disrupt and end white supremacy.

Whiteness has long presented our people with an avenue for perceived power, worth and security in the face of systems that divide and segregate, oppress and eradicate, and distribute resources only to those with the most privilege. But the kind of power that whiteness wields is destructive, and the worth and security it alludes to are merely mirages.

Whiteness is embodied. It is literally held in our bodies, our instincts, our habits, and not just in what we believe or think. The good news is, each of us has agency in what we embody – and claiming that agency requires work, practice, and community. We are also supported by the wisdom, knowledge, and experiences of the people we come from who lived before whiteness, and those who chose to be traitors to whiteness.

Our true, liberatory power* is not within our whiteness. So, where can we find it?

Our Offering

Dreaming Futures Beyond Whiteness:

white people re-making our relationship to power, worth and security

Dreaming Futures Beyond Whiteness offers a rigorous and nourishing space for those of us who have inherited whiteness (whether in this generation or centuries ago) to begin to re-make our relationships to how we understand, cultivate, and embody worth, security, and power.

Dreamtime is a place of deep imagination, of integration, of other-worldly meandering. While it can be a place of deep rest, it can also be a place for radical activation, initiating us into futures our rational minds can’t always conceive.

We invite you to join us in this dreamspace.

the intentions

During this experience, we (participants and facilitators) will:

  • practice what it means to actively refuse whiteness as our perceived source of power, security and worth

  • redefine how we understand and relate to power

  • cultivate a renewed sense of worth, security, and power-with (as opposed to destructive power-over) through repaired connection and mutual relationship with: earth, body, emotion, story, ancestry & lineage, imagination, erotic & pleasure, work, rest, death & grief, spirit, and the collective

  • practice tending to the end of whiteness and grounding into a long-term vision for what comes after, under, and beyond whiteness

  • experience the magic that happens when doing this work among a group of people with depth, care, love, and rigor, in a beautiful and lovingly tended place

who is this for?

This space is for white people who…

  • this description speaks to!

  • are committed to working from the inside out.

  • are wanting to step back from the urgent demands of the current moment and invest in a long-term vision that can sustain you.

  • want to spend time practicing with and within your body.

  • want to deepen in relationship with other white people doing this work.

what to expect

This space will be a co-exploration of what it looks like – and what is actually required – to disempower whiteness from the inside out, within our own bodies, and in community. While the space will be thoughtfully facilitated by El, Roan, and Jen, participants will bring their knowledge and wisdom, their tools and practices, as we delve into this work together.

While we anticipate that these sessions will contribute to participants’ sense of self empowerment, which matters, the focus will be equally on building liberatory power within and between us as a direct contrast to the impulses and overemphasis on the power-over (supremacist power) of whiteness. In white-dominated spiritual and wellness cultures that often over-emphasize the role of individual healing in a vacuum, we will do this work in real time, together, as a practice of politicized healing, and for the benefit of collective well-being.

This space will be a mix of care, joy, rigor, and love, supporting each other in growing into new practices and disrupting patterns we’ve long held in our bodies. This is a space by and for white people, where we make some progress around how we hold whiteness individually and as a collective…so that we can practice differently in our home communities.

*Our use of this phrase is influenced in part by how it is defined in The Power Manual: How to Master Complex Power Dynamics by Cyndi Suarez (2018).
